Kerry Beard is Cowboy of the Year for Timpson/Garrison

Representing both Timpson and Garrison as 2018 Cowboy of the Year is Kerry Beard who is the pharmacist at Bussey Drug Store, which he operates with his wife Terry. His father, Melvin Beard owned and operated a drug store in Garrison and bought Bussey’s in Timpson.

Kerry Beard was born in Nacogdoches to Joan and Melvin Beard of Garrison. He grew up in Garrison, graduating from Garrison High School in 1977. After high school graduation, Kerry attended Stephen F. Austin State University for two years and then the pharmacy school at the University of Houston for three years, graduating in 1983.

Kerry’s first job while going to school was in Darrell Lunsford’s auto garage in Garrison. After receiving his pharmacy degree, Kerry first worked as a pharmacist in his father’s drug store in Garrison. Kerry did say that his father was a definite influence in his choice of career. And, instead of choosing to find a job in Houston, he wanted to come back to East Texas to live.

Kerry and Terry Jones Beard met in Nacogdoches – she, being from Center and Kerry, from Garrison. They married and have one daughter, Catie (known as C.J.), who is 27. The Beards run Bussey Drug Store together.

In his leisure time, Kerry enjoys hunting and fishing. He enjoys the outdoors, as his family have run a cow-calf operation for years. Kerry grew up competing in Team Roping. He won the USTRC Championship in Monroe, Louisiana. He also competed in the World Series of Team Roping in Las Vegas, Nevada two times.

Kerry Beard served for nine years on the Garrison ISD School Board of Trustees. The Beards are members of Garrison Methodist Church.

East Texas Press congratulates Kerry Beard and all the Cowboys of the Year. They all exemplify the principles of the Cowboy Code of Conduct, and East Texas is fortunate to have them here.
