Tigers Advance To Fourth Round With 35-14 Win Over Carlisle Behind Lloyd and Marshall Big Plays
The Tenaha Tigers who had been dominant the past years in Class A Division 2, moved up this year to Division 1 and all the so called experts of Texas High School Football said the Tigers would have a hard time competing with the big boys of Division 1 football. But everyone from Tenaha knows you can never count the Tigers out as they defeated the Region 3 favorite Carlisle Indians 35-14 Saturday at Hallsville.
The Indians came into the game 12-0 and averaging over 400 yards of offense a game where held to a total of 112 yards and only 8 yards on the ground. The Tiger defense held the Indians Quarterback Gerald Turner to -13 yards rushing on 16 carries. Jordan Marshall picked off 3 Turner passes and Jay Lloyd had 240 yards on 32 carries and 4 touchdowns.
The Tigers received the opening kickoff and could not muster much offense as they would have to punt the ball. The Indians would also find it tough as the Tigers forced them to punt on 4th down. The Tigers would take over on the 35 yard line, from their the Tigers would go on a 10 play drive capped off by a 7 yard run by Lloyd, the try for 2 points was no good and the Tigers would lead 6-0 with 5:19 left in the 1st quarter. After the Tigers held the Indians again the Tigers would take over on the 15 yard line, on 3rd down and 13, Jenkins pass was picked off by Turner who would go 42 yards for the Indians touchdown and the Indians would lead 7-6. The Tigers would take over on the 20 yard line after the Indians punt and Jay Loyd would come in at quarterback as the Tigers would the Wildcat formation. Lloyd would then carry the ball 8 straight times as he would score from the 17 yard line, the PAT was good and the Tigers would lead 13-7 with 10:38 left in the 2nd quarter.
After the kickoff the Indians would start on the 42 yard line, Marshall would pick off a Turner pass at the 10 yard line and return it to the 22 yard line. From there the Indians would get a dose of Lloyd, Marshall and Patton and finally score on a 2 yard run by Lloyd and go up 19-7. On the Indians next possession Marshall would pick off another Turner pass and bring it back to the 48 yard line. Marshall would then score on a 5 yard run to put the Tigers up 26-7. The Indians would try to get on the board before the half but Marshall would pick off the pass in the endzone and the Tigers would go in at halftime leading 26-7.
The Indians would start the second half on the 23 yard line, but on the first play Turner was sacked in the endzone for a safety and the Tigers would go up 28-7. After the Indians kickoff, Lloyd would get the ball 4 straight times and score on a 13 yard run to put the Tigers up 35-7. The Indians would finally get on the board again in the 4th quarter on a halfback pass from Price to Turner to bring the final score to 35-14.
Hats off to the Tiger coaching staff for such a great game plan to stop Turner, who has been compared to former great high school quarterbacks as Reginald Davis and Rashuad Paul.
The Tigers will now take on the San Augustine Wolves who they defeated back on Sept 21. 14-0 at Tenaha. Game Time will be 7:00 Friday at Nacogdoches High School.
