Tenaha Beats Iola 35-14, Setups Showdown with Timpson Bears
For the 3rd time in 4 years, the Tenaha Tigers defeated the Iola Bulldogs in the playoffs. This time, 35-14 Friday night at Palestine Westwood High School. With the win, the Tigers advance to the Quarterfinals to play district foe Timpson Bears who they defeated 40-6 back on November 10th.
The Iola Bulldogs won the toss and elected to receive, after taking over on the 36 line the Bulldogs came out with a halfback pass on the first play and picked up 17 yards down to the Tigers 47-yard line, after a loss on a run and two incomplete passes the Bulldogs had to punt the ball away. The Tigers would take over on the 44-yard line and from their they would go on a 10-play drive capped off by a CJ Horn 17-yard touchdown run, Gustavo Tovar would kick the PAT and the Tigers led 7-0 with 6:19 left in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs would take over on the 21-yard line after the kickoff and move the ball down to the Tiger 44-yard line before having to punt the ball away. For the first time in a while the Tigers would go 3 and out and had to punt. The Bulldogs would take over on the 48-yard line and after a first down move the ball to the 18-yard line, where they would try another trick play and this time it worked for a touchdown as Zack Dyer would hit Tyler Dykes on an 18-yard touchdown pass and that would tie the score 7-7 with 10:12 left in the 2nd quarter.
After possessions by both teams where the Tigers would take over on the 48-yard line with 3:01 left before halftime. Onterio Thompson who had 149 yards rushing on 19 carries would score on a 11 yard run and the Tigers would go into halftime leading 14-7.
The Tigers would receive the second half kickoff and go 55 yards on 4 plays as Thompson would go 20 yards for the touchdown and the Tigers would up their lead to 21-7. After a Bulldog punt and then a Tiger turnover the Bulldogs would take over on the 49 yard line. From there, the Bulldogs would go on a 11-play drive as Dykes would score from the 12-yard line to bring the score to 21-14 with 4:51 left in the 3rd quarter. The Tigers would waste no time in scoring as Horn would hit Jay LLoyd on a 69-yard touchdown pass and the Tigers upped their lead to 28-14. The Tigers would score their final touchdown of the night on a 22-yard run by Thompson to bring the final score to 35-14.
The Tigers will now take on the Timpson Bears who defeated Grapeland Friday night 67-28. The Tigers defeated the Bears 40-6 in the last district game of the year.
