Dynamic Duo Leads Tigers To State Championship game 60-22

 

    The dynamic duo of Trai Gardner and Onterio Thompson put on a show for the Tiger fans and the everybody watching Thursday night in Crockett as the Tigers defeated the Burton Panthers 60-22 to advance to the State Championship game this Thursday at 11:00 at Cowboy Stadium against Muenster.

    Gardner caught 4 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns, had one carry for 65 yards for a touchdown and had two interceptions one he ran back for 96 yards for a touchdown. Thompson carried the ball 14 times for 241 yards and 4 touchdowns.

    Tenaha won the toss and elected to defer to the second half. After the kickoff the Panthers started on their own 30 yard line but on 4th and 2 from their 38 the Tiger defense came up big and stop he Panthers for no gain. From their it took the Tigers 6 plays to score as Thompson went in from the 4 yard line, the PAT was no good and the Tigers led 6-0. The Panthers started their next drive on the 32 yard line and got down to the 13 yard line where they attempted a pass but it was picked off by Gardner who went 96 yards untouched for the touchdown and with 4:53 left in the 1st quarter the Tigers would led 13-0.

    After the Panthers would drive to the 29 yard line, on 4th down they attempted a halfback pass that was broke up by Gardner in the end zone and the Tigers would take over on the 29 yard line. On the first play CJ Horn would throw a pass to Gardner who would go 71 yards for the touchdown and the Tigers would lead 20-0. The Panthers would then go on a 13 play drive that was capped off by a Brantley field goal and the Tigers would lead 20-3. After a Tiger fumble the Panthers would close the gap on a 1 yard run by Winters to bring the score to 20-10. After a punt by the Tigers the Panthers again where driving when Gardner picked off another pass in the end zone.

    Coach Horn made some halftime adjustments and the Tigers came out the third quarter and score 4 touchdowns. Gardner ran the second half kickoff back only to have it called back because of a penalty, but on the first play from scrimmage Gardner would go 65 yards for the touchdown and the Tigers increased their lead to 26-10. After a interception by Giles on a 4th down by the Panthers, the Tigers would go 83 yards on 5 plays capped off by a by a 52 yard touchdown pass from Horn to Gardner and the Tigers led 33-10. Winters would run the kickoff back 72 yards to bring the Panther within 33-16. On the Tigers next possession Thompson would go 56 yards for the touchdown and with 3:29 left in the 3rd the Tigers would led 40-16.After a Panther punt, Thompson would score again on a 30 yard run and the Tigers would led 46-16 after 3 quarters of play.

    After another Panther punt, Thompson would go 73 yards for the touchdown and the Tigers would led 53-16. The Panthers would score a on a 19 yard pass to bring the score to 53-22. The Tigers would get their final touchdown of the night on a 15 yard run by Garrett to bring the final score to 60-22.

    The Tigers will now play in their 5th State Championship game where they are 2-2, having won it in 1998, and 2011.  Tickets for the game are on sale at TISD till Wednesday or you can get tickets at the Stadium. Everyone put on their maroon and white and travel to Arlington Thursday to cheer on the Tigers as they go for the Championship.
