Gary Cheerleader Visits London
A dream came true for a junior at Gary High School recently. Shyenna Letter, head varsity cheerleader at GHS, spent part of the recent holidays in London, England and cheered in the London New Year’s Day parade while there.
Shyenna made All American Cheerleader at her UCA camp last summer which earned her a chance to travel to London for the parade. “I was so excited to make All American,” she said. “But I really didn’t know if my parents would let me go! It was definitely the trip of a lifetime!”
Over 1000 cheerleaders from across the United States headed off on airplanes the day after Christmas to spend a week across the Atlantic Ocean. They were divided into 4 different groups based on what city they flew out of. Shyenna flew out of Houston which put her in the “Jump for My Love” group. The cheer dance she learned she was to the 80s pop song of the same name by the Pointer Sisters.
While in London, Shyenna was able to visit Windsor Palace where the royal wedding will take place this May. She also visited Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace where the royal family resides. Each group was given free time to shop and visit sites that appealed to them with their escorts. The second night of the trip, the cheerleaders were treated with tickets to see the play, WICKED, which is also currently playing on Broadway in New York.
On New Year’s Eve, the UCA groups attended a NYE party at the hotel where they stayed. “That was so much fun,” Shyenna said. “I called to say Happy New Year to my family and it was only 6 pm at home.”
“I would go back again if I had the chance,” said Shyenna. “Nine hours is a long time to be on a plane but it was so worth it. I made new friends. Saw things that I have only heard about. And had so much fun cheering in the parade! I’m so thankful for the memories that I got to make that week. London was a great experience!”
Shyenna is the daughter of Shona & Tim Guenther and David Letter all of Carthage.
The Varsity Association has been taking cheerleaders that make All American to London for the New Year’s Day parade for 30 years. This award is given out during the summer camps sponsored by UCA, NCA and other accredited cheerleading camps.
