Timpson ISD greets students first day of school

Timpson ISD will greet students Monday August 22 for the first day of the 2016-2017 school year.  The school day will be from 7:45 a.m. – 3:35 p.m.  Meet the Teacher night will be Thursday August 18 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Parents of elementary grade students may bring their child’s school supplies to put in their classrooms.

This year student meals, both breakfast and lunch, will be free.  Middle School and High School will have two opportunities to eat one breakfast before school and during second chance breakfast at 8:39 a.m. – 8:59 a.m.  Snacks may be purchased during both meals.

The district will launch programs and initiatives on all three campuses this year that will help prepare all students for college readiness and career success.

Timpson Elementary School will use the AVID program with the fifth grade.  The program teaches students the skills needed to be successful in middle and high school as well as later on in college or the job market.  It teaches student success skills such as listening, speaking and writing with emphasis on self-advocacy skills, note-taking strategies, critical thinking, study skills, time management and goal setting.   Lessons will also emphasize instruction on writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading to learn in all contents.

At Timpson Middle School the college/career readiness program will include administering an interest and skill inventory test to determine which career paths students may have an ability and interest in pursuing.   Staff will also meet with parents twice a year to develop and monitor an individual educational college/career readiness pathway.

Timpson High School will expand its offerings for students who want to take college and technical certification classes.  Students have the opportunity to take the number of college classes to earn an Associates’ or two year college degree.  Certification classes will also be offered that will allow students to graduate with a certification in areas such as certified nursing assistant, welding, day care worker and many others.  Staff will schedule individual meetings with students and parents to discuss the many options students have in earning college credit and technical/career certification while in high school.

Timpson ISD will also begin construction on the building/renovation projects that were approved in last May’s bond election including  new and safe parent pick up at the elementary school, a new bus barn, repair and expansion of parking areas, new playground for elementary students, a new vocational agriculture career/technology center, school event center with UIL compliant stage/gymnasium, eight additional classrooms, renovation and expansion of the band hall, drainage corrections on campuses and track.  Completion for the facilities project is projected to be 2018.
