Bears Lose in First Round to the Indians
The Timpson Bears took on the Groveton Indians in Rusk Eagle Stadium this past Thursday night. This was the first round of the playoffs and both teams were anxious to advance.
The Bears won the toss and chose to defer. On the Indians first possession, they were unstoppable and scored quickly. The PAT was good and Groveton took an early lead, 7-0. The Bears could not advance on their first drive and had to punt. The Indians offense was on point which lead to the second touchdown by Chavez early in the first quarter. The kicker placed it through the uprights and the lead grew, 14-0. Neither team could find the goal line ending the first quarter and the score remained.
The Bears made a good drive into Indian territory to begin the second quarter but the Indians defense held and the ball was turned over on downs. On the Bears next possession, QB Braden Courtney threw an interception which lead to an Indian run to just shy of the goal line. Chavez then ran in for his third Indian touchdown. The kick was no good and the score was 20-0. With 3:30 left in the first half, the Indians run 58 yards for yet another TD and with a good PAT they widen the lead, 27-0. The Bears then drove the ball deep into Indian territory and with 25 seconds left in the first half, a fumble would turn the ball over to the Indians. On that same possession, an Indian pass would put up another touchdown with one second left before halftime. The Indians had a 34 point lead as the two teams left the field ending the first half of play.
The Bears came back in the third quarter and #6 Courtney with a keeper, finally put the Bears on the board. The extra point was blocked and Groveton was brought down at the 50 unable to score on the botched attempt. Both teams would end up punting the ball on the next two possessions. Then a breakaway punt return by #6 Braden Courtney would put another up another 6 for the Bears leaving the score 34-12. However, the Indians would counter with another touchdown of their own with 2:52 left in the 3rd. The kick was no good and the Indians took a commanding lead, 40-12.
The Bears' defense just could not hold the Indians and in the fourth quarter, the Indians would score again. The PAT was good and the Indians led the Bears, 47-12. A late Bears attempt would leave them just shy of the goal line but they would turn the ball over on downs. As the game clock ended, an Indians win advanced them in the playoffs and the Bears season was over.
All the Bear fans would like to thank our boys for an awesome year. Always remember, football is like life. It requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority - Vince Lombardi. Until next year.................
