18-wheeler slides over 300’ on its side through the intersection of Hwy 59 and Hwy 84
On Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at approximately 4:08 p.m., an 18-wheeler overturned near the intersection of US Hwy 59 and US Hwy 84 south of Timpson. The truck was driven by Matthew Corwin Rooks, 40-years-old, of Hopkins, Michigan. Rooks was carrying a load of raspberries and blackberries.
From the preliminary investigation, it appears that the truck slid over 300’ after the initial point of contact, then sliding on its side to rest in the ditch of the northbound side of US Hwy 59. Rooks was ticketed for Failure to Maintain Safe Speed and for Failure to Maintain a Single Painted Lane. Rooks was treated on scene by Timpson EMS for minor injuries.
Timpson VFD responded for traffic control. Timpson PD’s Chief Graham and Shelby County Constable Jake Metcalf also responded to the incident. Northbound lanes of traffic were shut down on US Hwy 59 for more than three hours while Hopkins Wrecker Service worked to clear the northbound lanes.
