PANOLA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE PRESS RELEASE REGARDING DeBerry SHOOTING
On May 23, 2019, at approximately 5:00 pm, Panola County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting on CR 3151 in DeBerry, Texas. One of the callers reported that at least one person had been shot during an argument and the actor was still on the scene armed with what appeared to be a rifle. While deputies were in route to the scene, further information was obtained that the victim was being transported to the hospital by private vehicle. As the driver of the vehicle left the residence with the victim, they noticed an Inter-Community firefighter vehicle on US Highway 79, who was responding to the scene. They flagged down the firefighter for assistance, who discovered that there were two shooting victims in the vehicle. Deputies and investigators arrived at the scene where they made contact with the suspect and later placed him in custody for the shooting. While deputies secured the scene of the shooting, other investigators secured the scene on Highway 79 where the firefighters were conducting life-saving measures on the more seriously injured victim, as well as aiding the other shooting victim. One victim appeared to have sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene by Panola County Justice of the Peace Toni Hughes. The other victim sustained a single gunshot wound to the hand and was transported to the hospital by EMS.
The suspect, Tramaine Butler, age 20, of DeBerry, Texas was taken into custody and charged with Murder. The deceased, Keileon Johnson, age 22, of Waskom, Texas was transported to Dallas for autopsy. Panola County Investigators are in contact with Criminal District Attorney Danny Buck Davidson as they proceed with the investigation.
