Melba Joyce Battles, 82, of Nacogdoches, passed away Saturday, September 5, 2020, at her residence in Nacogdoches.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center with visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. Bro. Cecil Chessher will officiate. Interment will follow at White Rock Cemetery in Center.
Born December 23, 1937, Melba is the daughter of the late Tracy Hughes and Opal Bradshaw Hughes. Ms. Melba Battles was known to many as “Miss Melba” spending numerous years caring for the children in her Martinsville community. She became an honorary grandmother to so many children and impacted the lives of many young girls and boys. Her hobbies included painting and cooking and her home quickly became a museum to her artwork. She was a very talented lady with an overwhelming spirit of humility. But Ms. Melba’s sincerest passion in life was for her children, her family and her Savior. She tirelessly and sacrificially gave of herself to love her family, provide and care for them while endlessly praying over each of them. She has left an immeasurable legacy of character, love, honor and faith in the lives of our family. Truly she has heard the words of her Savior, “Well done my good and faithful servant.”
She is survived by her children, Joy Scarborough and husband Dean of Nacogdoches, Linda Raymond and husband Doug of Lindale, Sonda Gross and husband B.J. of Nacogdoches, Shane Battles and wife Sheri of Longview, Sean Battles and wife Amanda of Nacogdoches. Also survived by three stepchildren, Ricky Battles and wife Beverly of Nacogdoches and children Tammy, Amanda and Matthew, Dennis Battles and children Bryan and Susan, Gay Joyner and husband Tony and children Misty, Alena and Grace. Mrs. Battles grandchildren are, Jason Scarborough, Brandon Scarborough, Hunter Scarborough, Kennon Sharp, Austin Raymond, Magen Martin, Conor Gross, Lauren Battles, Kylie Battles, Emily Battles, Tori Ferrebee, Cole Battles, and Amelia Battles. Melba also has numerous great grandchildren as well as great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters and brother, Virginia Campbell of New Caney, Huey Hughes of Irving, and Carrie Bailey of Center; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, J.L. Battles; parents, Tracy Hughes and Opal Bradshaw Hughes; sister Cheryl McCauley and brothers Jerry Hughes and Spencer Hughes.
Pallbearers will be Conor Gross, Cole Battles, Jason Scarborough, Brandon Scarborough, Hunter Scarborough, and Matthew Battles. Honorary pallbearer and musician will be Austin Raymond.
You will forever be missed Mom, but we will see you again, We Love You!!
