Interim Superintendent Alton Frailey provided the following report:

We got the school year kicked off right Tuesday with our Convocation and Vendor Fair. Teachers, staff and administrators gathered at Nacogdoches High School early in the morning and enjoyed breakfast along with the vendor fair, where 35 vendors were in the NHS main commons. We enjoyed some outstanding student performances during the convocation program, including the Golden Dragon Marching Band and the NHS choir. Lots of door prizes were awarded, and we also had state Rep. Travis Clardy on hand to thank him for his hard work and support during the recently completed legislative session for more funding for public education. The entire morning was just a good, positive way to kick off another school year.

And that serves as a reminder that the first day of school is almost upon us. Classes will begin in Nacogdoches ISD on Monday, August 26. Members of our leadership team will spread out around the district that morning to take a look at how things are going. Then we'll meet later in the day to compare notes. The most important thing on the first day of school is to get those students into the school, feed them, then get them home. It's an exciting time of the year - for students, teachers and parents - and it's something the entire community gets wrapped up in.

TxDOT is expecting to reopen the intersection of Raguet and Austin streets to three-way traffic sometime next week, just before school starts. That intersection has been closed down completely since the first of June while TxDOT widens Austin Street. While we hope that intersection is open by August 26, we will go ahead and prepare for any disruptions to traffic patterns, particularly for our buses.

Tomorrow morning NISD will hold its second annual First Responders Appreciation Breakfast. Chief Sandra Murray and her staff have been busy organizing and planning this event, which will be held at 8:30 a.m. at the Nacogdoches County Expo and Civic Center. I know many members of the board plan on attending tomorrow morning... we will be in the second floor meeting room at the civic center.

We learned last month that Dr. Tyrrel Grohman has been named to the 2020 Leadership TASB Class by the Texas Association of School Boards. Dr. Grohman is one of 36 school board members from around the state that will be a part of the leadership group. This is a proud moment for NISD to have one of our own receive this type of opportunity. It's a true honor for Dr. Grohman to receive this appoint, and I know he will use the opportunity to benefit our school district.

As you've likely seen, TEA accountability ratings were released today. We saw some good things as well as areas where we need to continue improving. The district's overall grade climbed eight points to a 79... an indication that some things improved, at least those things measured by a one-day snapshot of testing within the district. We'll continue to work hard at improving... we're not where we want to be at this stage. And once we get to where we want to be, there'll be even more areas we want to improve.
