Interim Superintendent Alton Frailey provided the following report:

Lots of things are coming over the next few weeks as we gear up for the start of a new school year. For any students that might be watching on the livestream, I'm not trying to ruin anyone's summer, but the first day of school is five weeks from Monday, on Aug. 26. Between now and then, there are a number of items to tend to... the Teaching & Learning Administrator Retreat is set for Thursday, Aug. 1. Football practice begins Monday, Aug. 12. Dr. Daya Hill has scheduled New Teacher Orientation on Aug. 5-6, and the Back To School Conference for teachers and principals is set for Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 19-20. Teachers will start returning to the classroom on Aug. 8... that's a lot of times and dates I just threw at you but we've got a lot of things coming up ahead of the start of the new school year.

Additionally, campuses have scheduled Meet the Teacher nights or similar events during the days leading up to the start of school. Parents with students attending NISD elementary campuses will have an opportunity to meet teachers; our middle schools and high school have similar events planned and Malcolm Rector Technical High School will provide an opportunity for students and parents to get acquainted with the campus. All the times and dates can be found on our website, along with other back to school information.

The NISD Convocation is set for Tuesday, Aug. 13, and board members, you're invited to attend. The breakfast and vendor fair will be from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. in the main commons area at Nacogdoches High School, and the convocation program will start at 8:45 a.m. in the competition gym. We'll have some student groups performing, including the NHS marching band. There will be door prizes for staff as well as a goody bag... we're really looking forward to it!

There have been plenty of projects taking place this summer. Last month I mentioned that work was underway on replacing lighting fixtures throughout the district. Four weeks later, much of the project has been completed and workers are this week at Dragon Stadium, reconfiguring the lighting there. The LED retrofit project is not associated with the bond package, but it became much easier for the district to commit to the work once voters approved the bond for a number of other projects.
