The parables of Jesus!
Over the next few weeks, I will be writing about the parables of Jesus, and how they relate to us today in 2019. More specifically we are going to be looking at the parable of the lamp found in Matthew 5:14-16 today.
14 "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; 15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven."
I would ask you, who is the light of the world?
Who is the city?
Why don’t we want to be hidden?
If you asked me, it would be because as being genuine Christians we want to spread the good news of Jesus Christ!
Think about this!
How many of us have Facebook, or Instagram? Any social media account really?
What do we do on them, besides check on our old bullies, and school friends? lol. With some of ya, it might be the only way you can have any friends! Just kidding.
But for real, when something happens in our lives, we immediately hit Facebook or IG.
We tell the world of social media, many times before we tell our real-life friends and family.
If this isn’t you, you probably know someone who is like that.
Maybe it's your spouse, or your sibling, or your child!
I wonder how many times dads, find out their wives are pregnant by Snapchat before they have the chance to tell them in person! You know its happened before, these youngins. HAHA
All in all, whether it's going to the kitchen to cook dinner, dust the house, or tell the world that little Timmy got his permit, we WANT the world to know!
So are we doing this with the gospel too?
I'm not talking about just sharing, a big long, prayer post. I mean are we really making the gospel known, and heard to people we come in contact with? Are we telling the world we are Jesus freaks, and we want them to be too?
You see the second half to being a city on the hill is, it is the first thing you see when approaching that hill!
There's no denying or guessing if that hill has a city on it because you see it right away! Boom, right in your face, like a pimple on a first date!
It's poking its nasty little head out! Or shall I say whitehead out! EWWWW
Too far! Awkward!
Moving on, verse 15.
15 nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
We turn on a lamp when it's what?
When it's dark.
When we need to see.
We know the world is dark, right? People need the light! So let it shine!
When you're letting your light shine, everyone that sees it will be drawn to it! It's kind of like bugs are drawn to light at night! Except for this light won't buzz ya dead!
Let your light shine in the world! I always think of that song “this little light of mine”.
16 "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven."
People are going to see God through you! They will know what you are all about, and who you represent!
Maybe you are asking, that makes sense for the new followers of Jesus, but how do we show our light to the world? What is light anyway?
Id ask you if you knew your story? How you came to hear about Jesus in the first place? Do you practice what the Bible teaches? Are you loving on people? Do you give God the glory? Are you setting a good example? Are you different than the rest of the world? Are you CONTRIBUTING to the kingdom of God? The church? OUR CHURCH? OUR COMMUNITY?
These are just a few ways you can reflect the light of Jesus Christ onto others.
