The Spanish-American War lasted a little less than four months, April 21st – August 13th, 1898 and ended Spain’s worldwide empire.  It ended with America easily defeating Spain and signaled the United States emergence as a world power.  The blowing up of the battleship USS Maine in Havana harbor on February 15th, 1898 with the loss of 266 crewmen and marines in essence was the start of the war.

Center Garden Club Feb. Meeting

SCSO seizes 7 grams of meth, Windham and Tillotson arrested

Sheriff Willis Blackwell reports that on Feb. 8, 2016 Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Sergeant 
Michael Griffin and reserve deputy Del Birdwell were on routine patrol in area of the new Loop 500 and 
FM 699 in Center. The deputies made contact with a vehicle bearing license plates and registration 
sticker which had been altered.

Commissioners Court approves full-time employment for Riley

Veterans Service Officer Sherry Riley, who has been working in the office at the Historic Courthouse on a part-time basis for less than minimum wage, was approved for full-time employment with the county at a higher wage. This was decided at the regular meeting of the Shelby County Commissioners Court on Monday, February 8. In addition to Mrs. Riley’s veteran duties, she will oversee the Courthouse as custodian.
