You won’t want to miss the festival's Watermelon Seed Spitting and Speed Eating contests which are held Saturday, July 11th under the big tent at 4pm. Don't leave after the seed spitting and speed eating because the 'biggest' event of the festival starts at 5pm when weighing in of Shelby County's biggest watermelons begins. 2015 What-A-Melon Run 5K and Walk
Submitted by Anna Lee

Center Rotary Club is gearing up for their annual What-A-Melon 5K/ Walk event which will be held on Saturday, July 11th. Each year, Center Rotary Club donates a major portion of the events funds to a local non-profit organization. This year’s funds will go towards the Shelby County Outreach Ministries.

Shelby County Outreach Ministries opened their doors in 1996 & incorporated in 1997. The idea & desire to start Shelby County Outreach Ministries, Inc. (SCOM) began with a free community Thanksgiving Day dinner in 1991. Since their inception they have gone through many changes. Currently they have 5 programs under our umbrella: Helping Hands Outreach , Shelby County Senior Nutrition Site, Meals on Wheels and Unique Boutique. The mission of SCOM is to help the hurting and feed the hungry. SCOM partner with local churches to help people during their time of need. SCOM also partners with DETCOG’s Area Agency on Aging, Churches, local businesses, civic organizations, and others to raise resources to help individuals to help themselves.

In previous years, Center Rotary Club has donated the 5K funds to: Shelby County Child Advocacy Center, Shelby County Scouting (Boys and Girls) and Center Girls Softball Association.
