    Beautiful Memorial Wreath

Center Garden Club Meeting

Today the Center Garden Club gracefully honored veterans of our community with a lovely luncheon, memorial wreath hanging, and a beautiful, exciting, emotional, and historical speech about his experiences and travels during WWII on the Battleship USS North Carolina by Mr. AJ Procell (United States Navy).
Veterans in attendance:
AJ Procell- US Navy WWII
Battleship USS North Carolina SNIC
He served 1943-1946
He witnessed Japanese surrender in the battle of Iwo Jima, Okinawa.
Larry Hume- Chief Master Sgt, United States Air Force (20 years service)
Command Chief Master Sergeant
Kevin Gratehouse- United States Marine Corp
1981-1993, rejoined and served 2004-2008, one tour in Iraq. Mr. Gratehouse left the USMC as a Gunnery Sergeant. During his time in the Marines he was an 0341, (mortorman/motortransport chief)
Victoria Huss- Ms. Huss served 1975-1978 in the United States Air Force and was a Senior Airman 1st Class. She was a medical lab tech and a medic for the USAF. She is a fierce woman who excelled in the military in a time when her world was ruled by men.
Jesse Maynard- United States Marine Corp, 1974-1979.
His job in the USMC was an 0311 or in civilian terms, an infantryman. CPL Maynard served on the USS Simon Lake (AS-33). CPL Maynard faced danger guarding Poseidon Polars Missiles, which is also a very honorable mission.
(*Fun Fact*- The UGM-73 Poseidon missile was the second US Navy nuclear-armed submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) system, powered by a two-stage solid-fuel rocket. It succeeded the UGM-27 Polaris beginning in 1972, bringing major advances in warheads and accuracy. It was followed by Trident I in 1979, and Trident II in 1990.)
We were all so very honored to be in the same room with these veterans who served this nation and put themselves in harms way for people they loved and those they didn’t even know.
“We sleep safely at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would harm us." -Winston Churchill
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
