Tigers win regional semifinal

The Tenaha Tigers came out of a slight shooting slum at just the right time when they shocked the state's #8 team, the LaPoynor Flyers, by a 67-59 score last Friday at Jewett's Leon High School last Friday.

Tiger senior guard Tyler Davison got Tenaha's crowd in the game with five 3-pointer's in the first half and another in the third period. The Tiger team teamed up for ten 3-ponters on the night, compared to LaPoynor's six long-range buckets.

The game started out as a back-and-forth battle in the early stages with Tenaha coming out on top at the end of the first period by a narrow 16-15 margin.

The Tigers gained a bigger lead in the second period when Davison hit four of his 3's and dished a timely assist to teammate Colton Goeke. THS out-scored the Flyers 17-12 during the frame and took a 33-27 lead into the halftime break.

D'Andre Thomas started scorig in the third period with a turnaround shot which gave THS a 35-27 lead with 7:11 left in the frame.

Xavier Oliver scored 11 points in the third period which helped the Flyers keep pace scores by Thomas, Davison, Goeke, and LaDarrius Garret helped THS out-pace LHS 18-15 and extend their lead to 50-42 going into the fourth quarter.

Tenaha's aggressive defense and athletisizm helped them gain a narrow 38-35 win last week over New Summerfield to get them to this regional semifinal and the fourth period of Friday's game would be no different. The Tigers grabbed seven steals in the final eight minutes against the Flyers. The Flyers where able to out-score THS 17-16 but four points in the last minute by junior Colton Goeke helped secure the 8-point win for Tenaha.

The Tigers returned to Jewett Leon High School again today, Saturday, March 7, 2015 to face the #1 seeded Big Sandy Wildcats in the regional final/ state quarterfinal elimination game.
