Coaching changes made at JISD
On Monday, Jan. 19 The Joaquin Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously voted to accept Superintendent Phil Worsham’s recommendation for Steven McCann to be placed as a Teacher/Coach under a 12 month contract with additional assignment as Athletic Director for 2015-16 school year.
It was also unanimously decided to place Wade Lawson in position as Teacher/Coach under a 11 month contract with additional assignment as Head Football Coach for 2015-16 school year.
McCann a Joaquin High School Class of 1993 Alumni, has been at Joaquin since 2003. He was Head Baseball Coach from 2003-07 and Head Softball Coach from 2011 to present. He has also been Football Defensive Coordinator from 2007 to present.
The school’s new Head Football Coach is Wade Lawson. He is a Joaquin High School graduate from the Class of 2005. He worked as an Assistant coach at Joaquin from 2010 to present and as Offensive Coordinator during the 2013-2014 season. He has been Head Baseball Coach since 2014.
Lawson was a starting pitcher on Joaquin’s 2005 State Quarterfinals baseball team coached by McCann. He also played both offensive and defensive back on football teams that McCann coached from 2003-2004.
These moves were made to adjust duties voided when longtime Athletic Director Wayne Gandy left on Dec. 19.
